I can relate to you I was deployed in 2009-2010 to Iraq the best I had was a 3 mile loop for 10 months. After a couple months that loop and treadmills get boring. Especially when your trying to put down 20-30 milers. I made it through with podcasts (trail runner nation) keeps the mind busy instead of the next pothole. Good luck!!!

G'day, wondering how you are going in Kabul? I'm an Australian (ex-Fed) negotiating with the UN who have asked me to do an evaluation project for them. I have three sons (grown) and an elderly Mum so probably shouldn't do stuff that is likely to get me killed. Security advisory notices aren't too cheery so thought it would be good to touch base with someone on the ground. I'd be grateful if you feel inclined to chat back.
Hi Stephanie,
I just came back from RTP Jordan which was my 3rd 250km race, and what a race... (I did Australia with you as my first ever ultra, and what a lesson in acclimation prior to a race...:)) Injured my knee on the first day in Jordan, but made it to the finish line in 30th position, so indeed happy!
My suggestion for a MUST have in you back pack is a Buff (or two), though not mandatory gear. They are "only" around 40 grams, but useful 40 grams. As you also write yourself, a Buff can be used for may things during a race, such a improvised gaiters. While we were in camp 4 during the Jordan race, we had a sand storm and my Buff "saved" me. I used it to cover my face while sleeping, not to wake up with my mouth, nose and eyes covered in sand. They also work as a good cooling device, e.g. when soaked and left under your cap and will protect you against the sun, especially on the long stage, when you are out in the sun for hours!

I love reading your blogs and I know how you feel running in small loops, I did 2 of my training weeks for the Jordan race on a offshore rig in the Bengal Sea, running on a 50m U-shaped walk path for 2-2,5 hours as often as possible, as one of the indian guys, broke the treadmill during his afternoon walk on it! As long as the mind is happy, we can run anywhere:)

Have a great day and hope you work will make a difference.

Good luck with the UTMB

Cheers,

Martin

Nepal is kind of close, and lots of great running here if you get the chance to visit. Just an hour from Delhi, but getting to Delhi is a different matter. See http://trailrunningnepal.org/. Best of luck with your training!

Hi Rebecca!! Thanks for commenting :) I'm really glad you like the blog. I totally know how you feel about frustration with injuries. I'm pretty sure I cried in front of Dr Costain at least once - he totally got it!! I haven't seen him in about two years, but I would definitely recommend him. He was sympathetic and really good. Most importantly, he understood the 'athlete brain'. If you go see him, please tell him I say hi...not sure if he'll remember me, but maybe tell him I was the crazy runner who he helped race through the Australian outback!! Let me know how it goes!

Hi there, I really enjoy reading your posts; your positive energy shines through :) Thanks for sharing some great tips too! Its awhile ago now but you mentioned seeing podiatrist Simon Costain in London - would you recommend him? I'm currently suffering from repeated injuries and I'm about to throw myself off the nearest building through utter frustration (not really, but bloody well feel like it at times!!!). I've seen a couple of physios but long term they haven't helped, besides, I need someone who thinks like a runner.
Anyhow, keep up the good work training wise and enjoy Portugal :)
